La Crosse, WI- The Most Charming City You'll Meet!

Hi friends!

So if my title didn't suggest enough, I just spent some time in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and it was one of the most charming places I've ever come across!

Like many cities, my time there was brief, but there were many good memories made. We arrived on Monday after a long yet AMAZING travel day (ok, so the travel wasn't so exciting, but our lunch break was AMAZING because I got to spend it at Petland. Who needs food when you can play with puppies?!). I had the evening to explore a bit, and this little town was literally out of a storybook. Little shops, themed bars and restaurants lined the Christmas-tree-lit streets, and it even snowed- it was like I was stepping into Bedford Falls from It's A Wonderful Life!

I only had shows on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, so I was spoiled with sleeping in and having some lazy days (a.k.a. my days starting in the early afternoon, going to our show, and spending the evening in the hot tub). This city didn't have a whole lot to offer (like, it's not a top vacation destination), but there were definitely memorable places. I visited a vintage style ice cream/ candy shop, which was connected to a coffee shoppe. Of course, I tasted selections from both places, and I was very pleased with the food and the atmosphere! I checked out the local music store, which had an amazing selection of instruments- unfortunately, I don't have any more room to learn a new instrument on tour! And if this little town couldn't get more magical, there was a used bookstore that even included a sliding ladder just like in Beauty and the Beast. I could've spent hours in that store browsing and reading books- I had my own Belle moment for sure! I even spent an evening at a bar for karaoke, which is something I haven't done in forever- naturally, my selections included a High School Musical duet and some Taylor Swift, and I had a blast!

If I had even just one more day in this city, I would've loved to check out some of the local art places- there was a pottery studio and a painting studio. I could've easily spent a whole day there creating different things! Some of the other bars and restaurants looked really neat too, and many of them had distinct themes (for example, a winter lodge or a 1970's starlight lounge), but alas, there just wasn't enough time!

I know this is a shorter post than most, but other than the charming places I  already described, I watched Netflix and slept. This wasn't the most interesting post, I apologize- but if you ever find yourself in Wisconsin, La Crosse is an adorable place to spend a couple of days!

I'm on to Minneapolis, Minnesota next. It's crazy to think that I was there only a short five months ago when my whole journey on tour began! I'm excited to see what I'll do this time!

I Got To Meet St. Louis!

Hello again, friends!

I guess I haven't looked at a calendar enough, because I can't believe it's nearing the end of January- and that means it's about a month of regularly keeping up with this blog! That's one New Year's resolution that I've kept up with so far, and I'd like to keep it that way!

It's clear that the whole first month of 2017 has flown by, and in particular, so did last week. I got to spend some time in St. Louis, Missouri!

I feel like my experience with the Midwest so far has been a lot of empty, bleak, cornfields and wide open spaces, so it was refreshing to get to a city. Besides the giant arch, I didn't know what the city had to offer, and I was pleasantly surprised! A lovely friend of mine spent some time in St. Louis and had some great advice about the city. A little insight was very helpful, but honestly, the most enjoyable parts of my week here were things that I stumbled upon.

We arrived last week Monday after a very long travel day. Though I was half-asleep and desperately ready for bed when we got to the hotel, the views made it all worth it- the hotel was literally right next to the famed Gateway Arch! I could easily look out my window and have a spectacular view! Seriously, my company management did a stellar job with this one (besides our hotel in Daytona Beach which was literally RIGHT ALONG THE BEACH...this was a close second!).

Since this was a sit-down week (meaning that we only were playing one city that week and only had shows on the weekend), I had some time to explore- three whole days off! Unfortunately, my roommate was sick and unable to explore the city with me (I know we'll make up for lost time!), but I enjoyed having some time to myself. I was able to get some even more close up views of the arch and nearby museum (which was formerly an important courthouse), and take advantage of my free Starbucks beverage. It was a damp, cold week,  but just brisk enough that a venti drink warmed me up perfectly. I had no exact plan and didn't really look at a map while I wandered around- it was a nice change of pace!

Being on the road all of the time involves a very crazy schedule, that sometimes I feel like I go on auto-pilot to get through the day. And while I love being able to explore so much of the country, some places definitely lack in things to do or inspiration. Especially as a performer, I don't want things to feel mundane or tedious- I love what I do, and I want to bring forth as much passion and energy to Show #100+ as I did to Show #1. But I am not a flawless human being, and these things sometimes get lost along the journey. I didn't expect it, but St. Louis was a refreshing city that gave me so much to appreciate.

On my first exploration day, I unexpectedly came across the National Blues Museum. I arrived with just enough time to visit, and the admission was totally worth it. I basically had the entire place to myself, and it was so nice to get lost in the music and the stories. I don't know a lot about the Blues, but many of my favorite artists are inspired some of the greats. It was so neat to really look at the foundation of the Blues, and the museum was a perfectly guided timeline up to the present day. There were even interactive stations that allowed you to create your own track! It's safe to say I learned a lot, and not just historical, factual things. Of course music is something I'm passionate about, but I felt like I learned so much through exploring other musicians' passions and stories. On the outside, a Blues song can seem so simple, but there's so much more that goes into it. So much heart and soul is poured out into the songs and all of the layers of music- I couldn't help but feel inspired when I left. I know I don't "speak the Blues" with the best of them, but music is truly a universal language. I'm so happy I stumbled across this museum!

The following day was just as good- I got a private voice lesson! As a singer, vocal lessons are highly important, but can easily get expensive or tricky to find a teacher you really click with. However, I was extremely lucky, because none of those things were an issue! The company was able to organize a wonderful instructor from the area. In addition to being extremely knowledgeable musically, she is also a yoga teacher. So much of your singing quality can be affected by your placement or stature, and it was very eye-opening and helpful to see things from her perspective. Her training with yoga had many positive correlations with singing. It's been awhile since I've been able to really look at the music of our show and have someone give me some pointers and constructive criticism. An opportunity like that is something I'm so grateful for!

The national tour of An American In Paris was also playing St. Louis in the time I was visiting, and there's no better source of inspiration than seeing a live show. I saw the show twice on Broadway and fell in love- I've always been a fan of Gershwin music, the film is a classic, and I'm typically a sucker for song-and-dance shows of the Golden Era. I went in with high expectations and was not disappointed! The production was just as beautiful and clean as I remembered it, and the cast was stellar. I know how difficult it can be to do so many shows a week, especially in one that features heavy choreography. But if the cast was tired or feeling lazy, I never would have guessed it. They brought forth such a forceful energy and passion behind their dancing- while watching them, THOSE are the things you strive for, and everything else should melt away. A performance like theirs was truly captivating! With all of the song and dance, and rhythm and music, I really couldn't ask for anything more!

Most of my adventures in St. Louis were somehow arts related, but I also got to explore the City Museum. If you ever stop in St. Louis, this place is a must-see. It isn't so much of a museum as it is an adult playground! A giant warehouse is filled with jungle gyms constructed of different metals, woods, and odds-and-end pieces- it's really an experience you have to see for yourself. All of the pictures in the world can't capture how diverse and creative this entire space is!

In all, this was a very packed week, not to mention we had seven shows last weekend! Seven shows in three days can be absolutely exhausting- most of my evenings were spent with some Netflix, a bag of ice, and my body rollers! Challenging as it is, I wouldn't trade it for the world, and I'm so happy that I got to spend some time in St. Louis. Being surrounded by so much art and music in this city left me feeling refreshed and inspired- I'd say it's in my Top Ten favorite places I've visited so far!

But all good things must come to an end, and it's on to the next- La Crosse, Wisconsin, here I come!

Welcome to the City of Beer and Cheese!

Hello friends of the Internet!

I'll admit I've been slacking by a couple of days- so I'm finally going to post about my trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Welcome to the land of beer and cheese!

Unlike our last travel day, the one to Milwaukee was very short- three hours was a much better time to spend on a bus! Shortly after arriving, I spent my evening at a yoga class. Yama Yoga was an adorable and inviting studio, and keeping up with my practice was a nice welcome to a new city.

Friday was my first full day off in about a week. As someone who isn't too fond of mornings, I took full advantage of sleeping in and not starting my day until it was basically the afternoon. Our hotel was connected to another hotel and a shopping center through multiple skywalk tunnels- considering how awfully cold it was outside, I enjoyed being able to explore the local area without ever having to come near it! To be honest, there was nothing too interesting in the immediate area. Obviously, better weather would've given me more of an incentive to explore. But my day still ended on a super fun note- I went to my first NBA game! As most people who really know me probably know, sports are NO WHERE near my forte. It's lucky if I know what sport it is and what teams are playing (yes, I know NBA means basketball, and the Milwaukee Bucks played the Miami Heat). My only experience with sports was playing kiddie soccer in first grade, and when asked to dribble ball, guess who was the only one of the field using their hands...yep, two thumbs up for this girl right here. I'm glad I realized at a young age that sports weren't my calling! And while the official logistics of sports are something I'll probably never understand, I truly enjoyed going to the game- I had a blast! My friends and I participated in all of the corny dances and cheers, and I was able to get my usual soft serve ice cream (priorities, people). I think one of the coolest things about being on tour is all of the random experiences I would've never thought I'd have- ME, of all people, going to a professional basketball game?! I guess I can cross it off the bucket list!

Our weekend was full of shows as usual, but we hit a huge milestone- we celebrated our 100th show! I've done shorter, theme park shows hundreds of times I'm sure (I never actually counted, though I wish I did), so this is also the first full length show that I've ever done this substantial amount of times. It's amazing to think how far myself and the entire company has come since show number one- I'm also amazed at the muscle memory I've been able to retain! It's particularly helpful when my brain has slow days but my body is able to keep up...but of course, I'd never actually admit to that (wink).

In all, my visit to Milwaukee was short, cold, and still sweet, and it was neat to see a little of what Wisconsin is famous for (seriously, beer logos were everywhere, breweries were on every corner, and silly places sold cheese hats like they're going out of style). I'll be coming back to the state soon, but until then, it's on to the next- St. Louis, Missouri! I've heard some good buzz about this city so far, so I'm excited to see what adventures happen next!

"Dubuque" Is Not Pronounced "Do-Boo-Quey"

Hello friendly friends!

The time has come again that I've traveled to another city- Dubuque, Iowa! As the title of this post suggests, I was completely clueless as for how to pronounce the name of this city (seriously, if I had a dollar for every city with a difficult name we've visited so far on tour...I'd have a lot of dollars!). However you say it, my time in Dubuque was short and sweet, and I was able to find some fun things along the way!

My week started with a super spectacular, totally awesome, eleven hour bus ride to the city of Dubuque (no sarcasm was used here whatsoever). Even though the ride was long and I closed my eyes most of the way, I was awake for the gorgeous sunrise!

Our show schedule here was also easier than usual- we only had two evening shows on Tuesday and Wednesday, which meant I had the entire days off to explore! I took advantage of being able to sleep in, and got my day (rather, early afternoon) started with some yoga classes.

Yoga is one of those things that I've always enjoyed, but found myself never really sticking with. In Manhattan, I was in a better routine of taking class, and then life happened, and I was drawn away from it. I wish I wasn't that way; every time I come back to class, I'm reminded of some things that I should keep with me more often. For example- touring has been amazing and difficult in so many ways. I feel like my roller coaster of experiences and emotions whirl by fast fast as we do traveling from city to city. I've been able to discover so much about our nation, and about myself- heck, I'm still learning more about myself everyday! It's one of those experiences that puts everything into perspective, and has allowed me to find who am I and the person I want to be. I'm realizing what is truly important, and my goals and dreams are becoming more definite every day. Yoga brings up so many wonderful mantras and quotes, and I wish I could remember every specific one the instructor shared with us. But overall, they emphasized on change and growth into the new year- hellooooo light bulb going off! I've jokingly dubbed this as the year of my quarter life crisis (I turn 25 in June...), and I don't want to view change as such a negative thing. Change is vital, change is GOOD- everyone needs to experience change in order for life to happen. I shouldn't be afraid to venture out of my comfort zone, or have confidence in my dreams. I know it sounds so cliche. I'm so thankful for everything I've been able to see and hear and do so far, and I guess coming back to class was one of those "right place at the right time" moments. I need these reminders in my life more than I'd like to admit- so who knows, hopefully I can incorporate yoga into my life more often this year!

In addition to classes, I was able to dine at a delicious cupcake shop which was conveniently located right next to the yoga studio (I'm sensing another trend this year...eating cupcakes...), check out a thrift store (where I managed to snag a Taylor Swift shirt for TWO DOLLARS), and visit the city's art museum! It was small but very inviting, and it was neat to check out the local history and reputable area artists. All in all, this was a charming little city to spend a couple of days, had some cute places to explore, and a good city to stay inside and read (shocking! Another cold city in January!).

And if winter wasn't cold enough so far, I get to head even more north for our next city- Milwaukee, Wisconsin! Here's to staying warm, and staying open-mind-and-hearted to whatever change and opportunities come my way! Peace and Namaste :)
